I believe the idea that you protect your country what ever and where ever the war is held is the primary though in duty men minds. Even of very high position. Doubt they are given much of an info since the real deal happens with other - non-military means.
But going through history and knowing that the big boys actually support both parties in most major warfare events...doesn't that knowledge have to sparkle the curiosity onto what the next event is actually all about ? Or did we became so ignorant and conformant to higher positions to simply skip such ideas ?
I'm not saying duty men are bad or whatever not but they are guided by all the wrong causes - sometimes non-existent ones.
That's the way it's been throughout the history of man, Coop... Rome, Tibet, Spain, Mexico, Africa, Europe, etc... going ll the way back to the BC eras and all areas of the earth..
I appreciate your view and questioning it, as I feel much the same. but fantasies dont turn into reality just because we think it. If we want to change it, we need to go back to the beginning of human civilization and change the mindsets way back when.. otherwise it's an ingrained instinct by man on one tribe trying to conquer the other.
going way back when, like the mayans and such. It's not about intelligence, it's about basic human psychology and intra species behavior. I wish it were about intelligence.

unfortunately mankind has been factioning themselves into groups, tribes, societies, and countries for as long as we've been on this planet. and then fighting with one another over the boundaries and control. tbh, it's not much different than any other species on this planet. we can roll the time clock back to when life began and other species did the same thing.
it's sad these dumb wars leave behind the destruction and hate they do. I makes me sick as an intelligent human being.
do you know Vietnamese farmers are still being killed today by cluster bomblets dropped 40 yrs ago.. they were buried in the earth on impact and the detonation device never went off. it's estimated up to to 20% of those bomblets (total) did not detonate. that's millions, then some rice farmer comes along 20-40 yrs later and puts a shovel on it and kablammo.
but you can't blame the US on this behavior, it exists in all of humanity. We are all a bunch of dumbasses bent on self destruction. just like some territorial dinosaur.
