Riptide and Polizei as site admins with Riptide as a founder account.

users with admin permissions: (invisible admins) - all admin/mod actions are tracked in the admin/mod logs.
mikeb12, charlie, speederlander with mikeb12 as a founder account.

charlie and speeder can view acp and post in admin forum and have access to the forum as forum admins. basically veteran admins with individual forum admin permissions in place, but no role or responsibility on the forum. the permissions are in place as a courtesy and respect, because they both have put in time as admins here. log tracking is in place for individual user admin/mod actions accountability on all user accounts with admin permissions.. if any of us performs an admin/mod function it is logged and the user can be held accountable.

since you opened back up registration, search bots a re-enabled to read all forums except admin forum.

I also enabled user activation by email, so you dont have to watch the manual activation list all the time. but you probably will have spam issues.

It's up to you how you want to handle this. I had originally put tom on board to do manual account activations as a registration admin. but it got old real quick, and he got tired of it.

so if you want to keep reg open, the choices are let the user manually activate with visual reg confirmation and email auto confirm.
OR
turn that feature off and manually determine who want in or out from the list at the bottom of the acp when you login to acp.


if you want registration open, I suggest using the way i have it set now, and just delete the spam as it gets posted. that way you dont have to deal with playing judge on that inactive list everyday. just give the bots time to work again, and you'll see what I mean. LOL!

Well I had considered that the CAPTCHA would filter out the worst.

that's the way it is set now. When a new user reg's they have to type the CAPTCHA then confirm via the auto generated activation email.

you can always change it in the future if you want. I just turn bot read access back on for the forums, so it'll be a bit before they start kicking out results in search engines. in a couple weeks you'll have a better idea on how you want to manage it.

btw: the forum is at phpbb ver 3.0.6 now. they had some security issues with 3.0.7 and tried to fix it in 3.0.7-pl.. so I decided to skip 3.0.7 all together and wait for 3.0.8

that's why you see the out of date version message in the acp when you login to it. (it's highlighted in red). once 3.0.8 comes out and is stable for about a month we'll goto that version. I hate being the guinea pig.

also consider signing up for google adsense to help fund the site, especially since the bots are allowed back in. https://www.google.com/adsense

and/or creating a paypal donation thread and/or button. then using an announcement thread to record/date user donations to give credit to those users wishing to keep the site alive with donations. I've been a member of sites that do this regularly, and it's a good way to keep the costs out of your pocket and recognize those who care about the site remaining open. the ones I participate in have done a annual donation drive, then pay the funds into the hosting account and keep it alive all yr every yr.

it's a good idea, and everyone benefits that participates, and is recognized for their contribution. plus a record is established so the users that do donate know the money is going towards the hosting expense, instead of being pocketed.

then all you do is edit the OP (annual donation drive) announcement as needed. Everyone who contributes gets recognized, and there is clear record keeping so there is no question as to what and where the funds come from and go to. (that's one of xs's site supporter features is lacking, they have no record for the public to see as to how much is taken in; so it discourages some users from participating). I can also create a "site supporter" user group if the 'site supporter' users want a different color username (like green).

anyway, just some ideas, you may want to implement. I've brought them up before, but it didn't go anywhere.

yeah, I tried a little one with this style. this style sticks it on the left then opens a big gap under the centered title text. so it was pretty gay looking...

for our purposes:
the logo is the title in the center, efficient and all we need. I can put one up there to show you how gay it looks on the left, but believe me it wasn't pretty. it opened up a big space under the centered title and moved the forums down. ugly.

Riptide can delve into creating graphics for the site if he wants. I'm not gonna put the time and effort into it, I suck at graphics design anyway, plus there's a lot of backend php file editing with VIM to customize banner and image sizes inside the php coded files so the images interact with the style correctly once you ftp them to the site, then the php coding gets erased every upgrade and you have to spend a couple hrs doing the php file coding all over again. for what? the few people that visit here, and dont look at it anyway. people come here to post, not look at pretty site graphics.

just ask charlie how much he had to pay a graphics designer and vb guy to create his graphics for his reef forum, it was like $600... plus a new fee everytime vb upgrades. (vb is very similar to phpbb, I installed charlie's reef vb site, but I wa not about to devote the hrs needed to provide graphics and custom vb file coding for it without getting paid) It' more complicated than you realize. you can't just go create a logo somewhere an upload it. if it's not the default size, then it all has to be coded into the php files for each style. it's a pita. that's why they charge so much for it.

a simple default logo that's already default coded into this style is fine, but like I said before it was pretty ugly looking. it looks much cleaner with just a title.
